RESEARCH PROJECTS & INSTALLATIONS

Auralisms: The Relativity of Acoustic Presence (2021)

“Auralisms the Relativity of Acoustic Presence” is an ongoing research project and interactive sound installation that was developed and realised during a residency at the Spatial Sound Institute (SSI) in Budapest in 2021 and utilizing the 4Dsound technology, a Dutch spatial sound technology that utilizes sound holograms. The Installation was premiered at the SSI in July of 2021. The sound and research has also been presented in Amsterdam at Other Futures festival in 2021 and in the Performing Arts Forum in St. Erme, in 2022. The project was funded by the Dutch Arts Council through a grant for Digital Culture.

Auralisms fundamentally consists of a transdisciplinary theory of presence that utilizes spatial sound as a medium for speculative action. It incorporates elements from the theory of General Relativity as well as Eastern philosophical ideas regarding presence and embodiment. The project falls in between the fields of sound art, experimental theory, conceptual science, and spirituality.

In more concrete terms, “Auralisms” investigates the notion of presence via the sonic exploration of spacetime via General Relativity and the concept of the multiplicity of being introduced by the Eastern spiritual doctrine of the subtle bodies. The aim of the research is to generate a theory of presence through the development of a speculative model of spacetime-to-sound transduction; the hypothetical conversion of spacetime into sound.

The Burial Theme: Trans-Matter Port & Objects (AV) (2018)

The Burial Theme: Trans-Matter Port & Objects is an audiovisual project that was commissioned by the Institute for Sound & Music and premiered in Berlin in 2018 at the Martin Groupius-Bau Museum. The piece was shown at a group exhibition titled “Hexadome” along renowned artists such as Brian Eno, Ben Frost, Thom York, Holly Herndon and more. The work consisted of a sound piece performed over a 55-speaker arrangement located within a dome structure, and 3D visuals showed through six screens contained within the structure. The spatialization of the piece was designed by Constanza Bizraelli during a 3-week residency at the ZKM (center for arts and media) in Karlsruhe, Germany. The visuals were created by visual artist Michael Tan.

Inspired by ancient Moche iconography and cosmology, the work explored the dualities of life/death, generation/destruction, and cohesion/dispersion cycles and how they appear as two planes constantly transposed onto one another. The Moche cosmology envisioned certain gates that render the intersections of both planes as a space for events. One of these might be considered the ceremonial or ritual space, a realm in which the distance and division between both worlds would blur.

The work aims to explore the ceremonial object both in its native context and as an “unearthed object,” expressing its connection with both ancient narratives and the transience and decay that operate in the natural world. This object, usually presented as a recipient, acts as a gate or a threshold, a geometrical key, and signifies generative space and the readiness preparatory to a transfer between worlds.
